phpBB3 gold announced

It has been yesterday official been announced, the next version of phpBB3 will be the first stable version, phpBB3.0.0.

This wrote AcydBurn, phpBB development teamleader, yesterday at phpBB.com:

7 years ago phpBB 1.0 was released to the community. Since then, phpBB evolved and grew over the years, now with a strong and healthy community and teams making sure everything runs smooth.

Everyone raise a glass to phpBB’s 7th release birthday. :)

As a little present to you, the community, we are now announcing the official release date of phpBB3 Gold:

13th December 2007 – 17:00 GMT

Be sure to be around for the release party – we want to celebrate the birth of the new generation Open Source forum software solution with you.

MODDB cleanup

Last week the phpBB.com MOD team has done the long ago announced MODDB cleanup.
Some of the MOD team members, including me, created a bytecast about this cleanup.

phpBB bytecast

Some of you known the offical phpBB podcasts. The teams now tried something so we have smaller episodes, with only 1 subject a episode, called bytecasts.

The first bytecast was released this night, where david, francis, jeremy and I introduced the bytecasts and talked a bit about modifying the database.

And for the feature episodes, you can except some bytecasts about MODs, the MODDB and more!

phpBB weekly

Last saterday I was a guest in the phpBB weekly podcast.

David (Highway Of Life) and I talked a bit about MODing, the MODdb and other MOD related things. If you are a MOD author, its a good idea to listen to it, as it contain some tips and tricks.

Eind vakantie alweer :(

En de vakantie is helaas alweer ten einde. Zoals ik aan begin van de vakantie schreef had ik genoeg te doen.
Helaas is er tijdens deze vakantie niet allemaal van gekomen wat ik helemaal wou.

De website voor tweehek is nog steeds niet geheel af, ook al is het CMS systeem ervoor nu haast af.

Het leren is zoals verwacht ook weinig van gekomen, wat moet je ook als je al jaren niets gedaan hebt, en nu opeens weer wat moet gaan doen? Ik zal wel moeten ben ik bang, want als ik geen voldoende voor dat vak haal, krijg ik eind dit schooljaar gewoon me diploma niet…

En ook het verslag ben ik niet veel verder mee gekomen. Maar hier kan ik gelukkig tijdens de aankomende lessen nog een hoop aan doen :P

Dan vraag je je toch af wat ik wel gedaan heb?

Eigenlijk niet veel anders als normaal, een flink aantal MODs gevalideerd voor phpBB.com.

Tevens was ik afgelopen zaterdag te gast in phpBB weekly, waar ik met david (Highway Of Life) een discussie gehad heb over (Zoals te verwachten :P ) MODs. De download is momenteel nog niet beschikbaar, maar ik zal een bericht posten wanneer deze beschikbaar is.

Ja, je leest het goed. Vanacht heeft de phpBB groep phpBB3 RC7 (Of zoals bij henry gezegt, phpBB3 RC6-pl1) uitgebracht.
Deze upgrade lost een aantal problemen op die in de updater zaten, de bbcodes die niet werkten, en missende form tokens.

Zoals gewoonlijk kan je hem downloaden op phpBB.com, een nederlands taalpakket is natuurlijk te vinden op phpBBService.nl :mrgreen:

Vanavond is na enige weken sinds de vorige RC release weer een RC uitgekomen. Deze keer met diversie veiligheidsfixes, gevonden na de audit die gedaan is.

De downloads zijn zoals altijd te vinden op phpBB.com :P

Alweer een week voorbij

De afgelopen week heb ik eigenlijk weinig gedaan naast school. Dit komt voornamelijk omdat ik 3 dagen tot half 5 (En waarvan één daarna nog savonds extra wiskunde) op school zit.
Het enigste beetje nuttige wat ik gedaan heb is een interface board in elkaar gezet, zodat ik straks met me PC de verlichting in me kamer aan en uit ken zetten. Enige probleem is dat ik nog een serie 230 volt relais moet halen om de verlichting echt te schakelen :P .

Voor phpBB heb ik helaas geen tijd gehad haast. Het enige wat ik gedaan heb is mijn Ajax Shoutbox iets aangepast voor de volgende update, omdat HoL graag wat wijzigingen wou zien. Vanaf versie 0.0.7 zal de shoutbox verdeeld zijn over meerdere files ipv 1.

How to develop a phpBB MOD.

Many times I have been asked how to develop a MOD for phpBB.

Developing a MOD for phpBB is not really diffucult. But before you begin, you need to have some basic knowledge of the following things:

  • PHP. phpBB is written in php, you can’t write a MOD without php knowledge.
  • (X)HTML. phpBB uses in his templates HTML. You need to have some knowledge of it to modify the templates.
  • CSS. To modify the style of your board.
  • The knowledge of read english texts, help people in english.

Before you start you need firstly think about what MOD you want to write. After that you can best look at the forums at phpBB.com to look at the MOD forums to see if there is a MOD that does the same.
If you dont found a MOD that does the same the next thing is to start a plan. You can’t create anything without a plan :P
Before really start the coding know you need to read the phpBB code guidelines, and MOD docs (See www.phpbb.com/mods/documentation/). Also, reading some of the code of phpBB can be usefull.

Now you can start the real writing of your MOD. Follow the code correctly, and test it :) . This looks easy, but I can’t write it more difficult :(

When you finished, and think you are to give a shot you can post it at the DEV forums at phpBB.com to let it test by users. After that, and again when you think you are ready for it, you can submit it the the MODDB to let it validated by the phpBB.com MOD team.

Dont forgot that you can’t learn php in a day :) . It can take months till years. And be patient when writing your MOD ofcourse :P
